The Empress tree is a pioneer plant; its tolerance and flexibility allow it to thrive where other trees cannot. Its nitrogen-rich leaves gradually create a more welcoming habitat for other plants to follow. The tree is stunning in spring when it’s covered in vibrant purple blooms. But to me, its winged seed pods are even more intriguing.
