Exploring Frogwood: An Artistic Retreat for Grownups

What to Expect at Frogwood

What is it, you ask? Frogwood is a remarkable event that occurs every other year at Camp Colton, a magical place southeast of Portland. I describe it as art camp for grownups, but it is so much more than that. For me, it's a unique opportunity to connect with fellow artists, learn from one another, and explore various mediums.

The experience is intense. Sixty talented artists gather with their tools and set up their workstations under canopies beside a big red barn filled with even more tools. Among us are jewelers, fiber artists, wood turners, blacksmiths, mixed media artists, and many others. Together, we spend five days—and part of each night—collaborating, creating, learning, and teaching. In those five days, we produced over 150 pieces of art.

Accommodation and meals are provided, fueling our creativity with fantastic food. It's truly an honor to be part of this event, which sends me back to my studio with renewed energy and a wealth of inspiration.

The Gathering of Artists

The week of Frogwood is a gathering of artists from diverse backgrounds, skill levels, and unique life experiences. What makes this event special is each participant's willingness to be both teachers and learners. Everyone understands the vulnerability involved when presenting ideas and seeking opinions. They genuinely believe that collaboration fosters personal growth and strengthens our community.

"The week of Frogwood is a gathering of artists from all walks of life, varying levels of experience, multiple genres, and unique life experiences. It works so well because every participant has opened themselves to be teachers and learners; has the deep understanding that each of us is vulnerable when ideas are proffered and opinions are sought; and truly believes that collaborating is a pathway to personal growth and a stronger community." My Collaborative Experience

During my time at Frogwood, I collaborated on numerous pieces. I also participated in casting and helped others learn the technique. Some of my cast pieces were integrated into various other works, enhancing their beauty.

As an exciting opportunity, several pieces I contributed to are available in the online auction happening now until June 8th. This online auction features many amazing items, and I encourage you to take a look!

Here are a few pieces I was proud to contribute to:

My Art Pieces at Frogwood

One significant project I worked on was titled "Holdfast." This term refers to a root-like structure that anchors aquatic organisms like algae or seaweeds. I discovered a holdfast washed up on the beach near my home and saved it for potential casting.

During the collaboration, @rongerton and I cast it in bronze, while @feltstrong designed the felt cording that connected the two parts. I love how ideas flourish during the collaboration. On the first day, I wandered through the work areas, brainstorming with Ron on the best way to cast the piece. I then stopped by Lisa’s workspace to show her my holdfast, and we brainstormed how to link the two components. I adored her idea of using a felt cord. We worked on our individual parts, and by the last minute of the last day, everything came together perfectly! This piece is available here.

My Jewelry Collaboration

I also collaborated with @glassheart_pdx on a set of earrings. Anumi brought beautiful glass links she created, and I brought shattered safety glass, unsure of how to incorporate it. However, they paired perfectly together. I then fabricated the findings to bring the piece together. You can view these earrings here.

Additionally, I worked on finials for a couple of exquisitely turned boxes in collaboration with Marjin Wall. You can see this piece in the auction here.

Additional Projects and Artworks

The number of projects I worked on was diverse and exciting. It was fun to witness the various ways pieces came together.

Collaboration Examples

One afternoon, I walked around the work areas, and I was astounded by the beautiful creations in progress. I witnessed incredible problem-solving, teaching, and learning throughout the event. Here are some photos showcasing the beautiful Camp Colton, where we spent our week, as well as the inspiring work being crafted by my talented peers.
